Job Opening: Mechanical Engineer

Location: Dayton, Ohio

Job Description

Design and develop electro-optic components, optical assemblies, and systems for military and commercial markets.  Technologies include: electro-optic systems, adaptive optical systems, high power fiber laser systems, infrared systems and imaging systems.


Duties include

  • Designing optical systems together with optical engineering staff
  • Managing local machine shops producing prototypes under contract
  • Producing blueprints for bid from machine shops
  • Working on projects from concept development inception to product delivery completion
  • Playing a primary role to develop designs and products to meet customer specifications and need
  • Developing technology and product concepts
  • Developing designs and prototype products
  • Assisting in the manufacturing and manufacturing processes to complete the projects
  • Ensure the development of marketable, affordable, and producible products which meet demand performance and cost requirements

Requirements

  • The candidate must be proficient in SolidWorks, Solid Edge or other CAD software (Strong desire for SolidWorks experience)
  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required; advanced degree is a plus
  • Machining experience (CNC machining)
  • Strong experience in developing electro-optic systems, laser systems, optical systems, infrared systems, and/or imaging systems
  • Strong experience designing optical, opto-mechanical, electro-optic  systems and opto-mechanical assemblies and precision mechanisms
  • Strong knowledge of geometrical tolerancing and dimensioning
  • Experience in designing hardware for production
  • Some experience in the fabrication and manufacturing of optical systems and/or components
  • Local candidates in Dayton, Ohio preferred, or willing to relocate.
  • Ability to work legally in the United States (US citizen, permanent resident or other visa type)

Other Desired Skills

  • Strong background in geometrical optics desired
  • Familiarity with optical ray-tracing (Zemax or CodeV)
  • Knowledge of optical metrology and interferometry
  • Experience in making precision alignment fixtures
  • Strong project management skills

Job Opening: Optical Communications Engineer

 

Location: Dayton, Ohio (preferred) or College Park, Maryland (USA)
Education: EE or physics degree (M.S. preferred), with an emphasis in communications, signal processing, and/or fiber optics.
Job Type: Employee, Full-Time


Job Description

Work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to conceive, design, fabricate, test and evaluate laser communication systems, initially prototypes and ultimately production products. Support the development of free space optical communication systems, including the development/integration of electronics and fiber-optics sub-systems, testing in the laboratory and the field.


Required qualifications

  • B.S. in electrical engineering or physics with emphasis in communications, signal processing, and/or fiber optics.
  • Knowledge of fiber optics communication, optoelectronic components, systems and testing equipment.
  • Experience in integration of WDM communication systems.
  • Experience with optical communication transceivers systems integration
  • Experience in developing and testing of laser communication systems, from prototypes to production products.
  • Experience with computer communications and control of electronic equipment.
  • Experience with digital or fiber communications technologies.
  • Skilled with using programming languages to analyze data or model system performance.
  • Must be able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong verbal, presentation and written skills.

Desired qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering or physics with emphasis in communication systems.
  • Experience with a range of optical and RF test and measurement equipment, laboratory prototyping tools and RF and photonic system design tools.
  • Experience in developing and implementing processing and control algorithms (e.g. error correction, DSP algorithms, etc.) in hardware such as microcontrollers and FPGAs.
  • Experience with signal processing, algorithm development and/or data analyses.
  • Good communicator, capable to produce clear system engineering synthesis in oral and written form, capable to discuss problems and to negotiate solutions.
  • Experience in assembly, integration, test and verification of digital and optical fiber communication.
  • Experience in hardware development would be an additional asset.
  • The successful candidate will have a practical hands-on problem solving approach, be effective at troubleshooting, be willing to travel and participate in temporary field work.
  • Knowledge of video communications links, optical transmission
    systems and CATV/broadcast networks.
  • Experience in Gigabit Ethernet and Internet Protocol Technology.

Other Desired Skills

Experience in a leadership role of technology or product development, from initial design to testing is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have demonstrated creative problem solving skills in the design and development of new technology systems. Applicants must be technically strong and possess superior oral and written communications skills. Candidates should be self-starters capable of working both independently and as part of a team. Occasional travel required.

Lead  and/or participate in design, integration, and evaluation of various optical systems, such as adaptive optics, fiber optics, free-space laser communications and imaging systems. Areas of technical focus are fiber amplifiers and fiber laser systems, laser optics assemblies including off-axis aspherical optics, CCD cameras and digital image acquisition systems, laser illumination, lens design and evaluation, and optical coatings design.


Duties Include

  • Working on projects from concept development inception to product delivery completion
  • Playing a primary role to develop designs and products to meet customer specifications and need
  • Developing technology and product concepts
  • Developing designs and prototype products
  • Assisting in the test and quality assurance processes to complete the projects

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or Green Card
  • Lens design experience (ZEMAX preferred, CODEV ok): Photometry and radiometry
  • Opto-mechanical system design experience
  • Good lab skills in relevant technical fields
  • Optical test equipment calibration experience
  • Tolerance analysis experience: Design and knowledge of polarization optics
  • Familiarity with diffraction coating technologies including thin films
  • Degree in engineering or science is required; advanced degree is desired
  • Local candidates preferred

Other Desired Skills

Background in geometrical optics. Knowledge of optical metrology and interferometry. Knowledge of optical coating, process and inspection. Experience in making precision alignments. Experience in cleaning methods for optical components.
